A chaotic break-in at a Long Beach home where police later found drugs and guns ended in violence on Saturday afternoon, when the resident shot dead two men after breaking in with four others , who fled.
The incident took place around 5 p.m. in the 3700 block of E. Esther Street, Long Beach police said in a statement. It was then that at least six men broke into a house and attempted to rob a man inside, which resulted in a scuffle.
The resident drew a gun and shot the men, hitting two – one man died inside the house and another collapsed on the walkway outside. The other men had left when police arrived, the statement said.
Police did not say why the men broke into the shooter’s house, initially only saying on Saturday that they found guns and “other items” inside the house. . Officials on Sunday said officers served a search warrant on the house and found “large amounts of marijuana, guns and cash.”
Authorities did not say whether the gunman would be arrested.
“Detectives will continue to work to determine responsibility for any other crime that may be related to this incident,” they wrote, “and will present all findings to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for review. “
Police said they believed gangs were involved in the attempted theft. They said the resident was not known to the suspects.
